While this may not be the ideal forum for a rigorous scholarly discourse on the etymology of the term "jam band," a definition is certainly in order. Indeed, some observers have suggested that the groups encompassed within this broad(ening) umbrella are unified less by their sounds than by their supporters. And while a grassroots commonality exists among fans of the circuit, there are musical similarities among the bands as well: they embrace improvisation as a performance ethic and, more importantly, they are unified by a penchant for bending and blending established genres. The performers listed below cannot be neatly sequester into bluegrass, jazz, blues, funk or electronica camps -- they are all of these at once.

Derek Trucks Band
Artist: The Derek Trucks Band
Release Date: 2004

This disc offers a tantalizing, protean take on the group's "world soul." While half the current band (vocalist Mike Mattison and keyboard player/flautist Kofi Burbridge) was not yet in the fold for this 1997 release, the enduring rhythm section of Yonrico Scott and Todd Smallie lays it down with verve. Trucks redefines the context and parameters of the slide guitar throughout. Highlights include versions of John Coltrane's "Naima" and "Mr. PC," as well as the band's own "Evil Clown" and "Out of Madness."

The Jammy's Award Ceremony: Live From The Theater At Madison Square Garden, 3/16/04
Artist: Various Artists
Release Date: 2004

Since the Jammys debuted in 2000, the annual awards show and celebratory concert has embodied improvisation by pairing musicians with minimal (or no) prior rehearsal time. Despite the occasional implosion, the ensuing spontaneous collaborations are often inspired. This collection, drawn from the 4th annual show, weighs towards the latter result with Dickey Betts, Assembly of Dust and Edie Brickell joining in for two of Betts' classic compositions ("Blue Sky" and "Ramblin Man"), Slick Rick melding with the Disco Biscuits for his "La-Di-Da-Di" and the Harlem Gospel Choir appearing with Soulive (featuring Maktub vocalist Reggie Watt) for a rousing version of "Stop Messing Around."

Ask The Fish
Artist: Leftover Salmon
Release Date: 1995

For many years Leftover Salmon was Colorado's definitive polyethnic bluegrass amalgam. (And then the String Cheese started to age...). Here, Leftover offers a collection of lively originals and traditional covers that occasionally, affectionately eschew tradition. While Ask the Fish conveys the group's spirited irreverence ("Festivaaal!"), it's also worth noting that the late Mark Vann was a two-time winner of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival's annual banjo contest, and his peerless picking helps make this early live album a showcase for the band's technical proficiency.

Live At Lupos, 6/12/2004
Artist: The Slip

The Slip bridges the bounds between jazz and pop aesthetics, with results that are occasionally abstruse yet often sublime. This release, a 2005 Jammy Award nominee for Live Album of the Year, presents the band in fine fettle at Lupo's in its native Rhode Island. Tracks such as the 20-minute "Nellie Jean" demonstrate that while the trio maintains an affinity for abstraction, it never neglects the sweet spots.

Offered Schematics Suggesting
Artist: Sound Tribe Sector 9
Release Date: 2004

Heralded as one of the progenitors of livetronica, this release finds Sound Tribe in the studio. Offered Schematics Suggesting Peace captures STS9 at a critical moment, when they transitioned away from their jazz and funk origins. The album rewards a focused listening session, as, like the band's live shows, it's best experienced as a series of entwined movements rather than a collection of compositions.

All Kooked Out!
Artist: Stanton Moore
Release Date: 1998

Galactic drummer Stanton Moore is one of those estimable players now vesting traditional New Orleans funk with a potency and primacy for a new generation. All Kooked Out! is one of the Crescent City native's initial efforts to this end, presaging some of his later shape-shifting jazz expressions with Garage A Trois. Eight-string guitarist Charlie Hunter and "saxophonics" purveyor Skerik are Moore's core band for these 13 tracks, which also feature fellow Galactic resident Ben Ellman and Sun Ra alum Michael Ray.

Steve Kimock Band Live at 07/17/2004
Artist: Steve Kimock Band

Steve Kimock is justly characterized as an heir to Jerry Garcia -- and not only because the late Grateful Dead guitarist identified him as a personal favorite. The two musicians share a drive to uncover novel tones and subtle shadings in any material while utilizing a similar sense of pacing. Current SKB staples drummer Rodney Holmes and guitarist Mitch similarly angle for adventure during the quintet's performance in an appropriate setting at the Vibes.
Weightless in Water
Artist: Strangefolk
Release Date: 2004

Since coming together in 1991, Strangefolk have fused a California '70s folk-pop sensibility with an affinity for improv. Weightless in Water, the band's finest effort, translates some more expansive tunes into the studio setting at a halcyon moment with co-founder Reid Genauer still in the fold (he would depart in September 2000 and form Assembly of Dust nearly two years later). Many of these offerings remain in active rotation both by Folk and AOD, including "Roads," "Westerly," "Valhalla," "All the Same" and "Whatever."

Umphrey's McGee Live At Fox Theatre 03/29/03
Artist: Umphrey's McGee
Release Date: 2004

Relix cover boys Umphrey's McGee (Dec/Jan 2005) also were anointed by Rolling Stone as "leading contenders for Phish's jam-smeared crown." This live set gives a sense as to why, demonstrating the band's prog-precision and high humor. Along with signature compositions "Uncle Wally" and "YYZ," this Fox Theatre performance presents two of the group's collective, semi-structured improvisational exercises: "Jimmy Stewart" and "Jazz Odyssey."

Weir Here: The Best Of Bob Weir
Artist: Bob Weir
Release Date: 2004

Bob Weir is not only an underappreciated rhythm guitar player, but his enduring compositions are sometimes denied their due. Nonetheless, Weir remains a vital artist as his current group, RatDog, embodies the ethos of the Grateful Dead, recasting older material while delivering vibrant new compositions. This retrospective mostly focuses on Weir's contributions to the good ol' GD (most notably through the live cuts, from a '71 "Truckin" on through an '89 "Music Never Stopped") with a nod to recent essential RatDog ("Ashes and Glass" and "Two Djinn").

Article Body:
When starting a new aquarium it is important to understand the nitrogen cycle. Many new aquarium owners jump into the hobby of fish keeping too quickly. Before purchasing fish, the aquarium must be cycled. This could take anywhere from twenty four hours to four weeks. In an established aquarium there are certain bacteria that help the breakdown of ammonia to nitrates, but they are not present in a new tank because they are generated from existing fish. If there are no existing fish, then there are no good bacteria.

The basic principle of the nitrogen cycle is this. Fish eat food and generate waste. That waste along with excess food and plant debris become ammonia in the aquarium. Ammonia is toxic to fish and needs to be broken down. That's why the nitrifying bacteria is important. This bacteria, turns the ammonia into nitrites which are more tolerable to fish than ammonia. Next, different nitrifying bacteria will turn the nitrites into nitrates, which are even less toxic to the fish and other aquarium life. The nitrates are collected and minimized by filters; however they will eventually accumulate in the tank. Regular water changes are required to remove the nitrates from the water.

It is important to set up and run an aquarium before any fish are introduced into the environment. Wash the tank and any substrate and decorations thoroughly with water. Don't use any soap. Fill the tank with de-chlorinated water and attach filters and lighting. Allow the tank to cycle until the water is no longer cloudy and sufficient P.H and water temperatures have been established.

Now it is time to purchase the fish! Buy hardy fish such as danios, barb, gouramis, and live bearers. They should be able to withstand the high nitrite levels and ammonia in the new aquarium. Only introduce about four fish at a time. Float the fish in the bag in the aquarium for about fifteen minutes before adding them to the tank. This will help the fish become acclimated to the water temperature in their new home. When adding the fish, be careful not to allow the water from the bag into the aquarium. It may be contaminated, or will at the very least, throw off the temperature and P.H. Allow the fish about two hours to become acclimated before feeding.

Only feed an amount that can be consumed in the first two to five minutes. Overfeeding is a common problem in an aquarium. It is important not to overfeed, because excess food will become debris adding to the ammonia levels. This is especially important in new aquariums that lack nitrifying bacteria. Test the water P.H. every day within the first month. Watch the tank for cloudiness; if the aquarium becomes cloudy, it may be necessary to add a clarifier. Monitor the fish for signs of stress or illness. A healthy fish will be swimming regularly. Lethargic fish will usually hover near the surface of the aquarium. After about a week change approximately ten percent of the water and begin regular maintenance.

Better Golf Solutions Start With One Simple Approach

Better Golf Solutions Start With One Simple Approach

Summary:
Better golf solutions is a mystery for the average golfer.  Finding the magic bullet that's going to cure your game overnight isn't going to happen.  In looking for better golf solutions, you've got to think about what's the main reason you're not making a sound, repeatable golf swing that generates power and accuracy?

Article Body:
Better golf solutions is a mystery for the average golfer.  Finding the magic bullet that's going to cure your game overnight isn't going to happen.  In looking for better golf solutions, you've got to think about what's the main reason you're not making a sound, repeatable golf swing that generates power and accuracy?

Common approaches to better golf solutions are taking more lessons; buying new golf equipment that will hopefully make up for your swing faults (such as offset/oversized drivers and irons); purchasing training aids that promise the world, but end up in your garage gathering dust or being sold on ebay; or going to the range with a new level of practice commitment.

The six million dollar question!  Did it help?  Are you happy with your results?

If the answer is yes…congratulations on your success!  If the answer is no, than what in the world is left?  You've done everything right?

I want you to think real hard for a second.

What one thing is critical in swinging a club, hitting the ball square and long, and producing results?

YOU!

You dictate your outcome!

Let me explain.

You body has a current level of physical capability.  It is what it is.  Whatever that level is, will be your outcome.  No ifs, ands, or buts about it!  You will never consistently play to what you think your potential is until you improve your "physical capabilities"!

If golfers knew this little secret, they'd save hundreds, if not thousands of dollars a year on lessons, gimmicky training aids, equipment and range fees.

You are an athlete!  A golf athlete!  You've got to "prepare your body to perform".

What other athletic event do you know of where the athlete just shows up without working on his/her physical attributes?

None!

I hate to be so blunt, but it is a fact.  Only until you realize this, and take it to heart will you achieve your golfing goals.  Your BODY determines your outcome.  Your BODY makes your golf swing.  Your BODY physically plays for 18 holes.  Your BODY dictates your confidence.  I hope you're getting the point here.

I can't say this strong enough!

Take the approach like an athlete and you will never have to think of better golf solutions.

Does Moon Really Influences Hair Growth? Truth Behind the Superstition

Does Moon Really Influences Hair Growth? Truth Behind the Superstition

Word Count:

Summary:
You always wait special days to cut your hair? Watch your horoscope to find best Moon day for the haircut? Learn truth behind the superstition about Moon and Hair Growth.

Keywords:
Hair, hair growth, influence, Moon, lunar cycle

Article Body:
Once I was surfing through the web and found a very interesting article about all popular superstitions that deal with hair. One of them especially sparked my interest. The author said that, despite of common belief, in no way possible can moon influence hair growth, because it simply cannot be, and that all this is granny's tales.

Well, of course, many of the scientists may lead you into long and dull calculations about how this influences that, and whether this influence is generally possible. But let's look closer at this concept.

When I was at the high school, my teacher of physics showed us simple formula how one physical body influences other physical body. Of course, she was speaking about the planets and really huge bodies. But I can give you three reasons why this law is true for all existing physical bodies, no matter how small, tiny, or minuscule they are.

Reason #1: Everything in the World Is Interconnected

General science speaks that every part of the Universe is guided by some laws of existence, and that world is divided into parts that we see and that we can't see. Moreover, every one of us knows that something small creates big.

In other words, all of us are made of particles that we can't see, and the big world is made of small things the same way.

Now let's think about this: if everything is guided by laws, and big world and small one are interconnected, then this leads to a conclusion that we are connected to the world, too and influenced by the general laws of its existence.

Reason one is proved.

Reason #2: Big Influences Small

Returning to my sweet teacher of physics, let's look closer at the laws of the mutual influence.

Who said that we are not influenced by the planet, OR planets? For example, there are weather sensitive people, whose state of health depends on sunny or rainy weather and atmospheric pressure. People are small and the planet is huge, planet influences people, big influences small.

So, why does something that is generally and physically possible seem so impossible to the self-oriented humans?

Let's assume reason two is proved, too.

Reason #3: Stars Are Not Simply Dots in the Sky

This reason is my final argument for those who know that world goes round, but are not likely to believe it.

There is an astronomy and astrology. Each of these sciences deals with stars. One predicts the future, second studies movements of the planets. First science isn't regarded by some of us as a science at all, second uses so many gadgets and technical devices, that almost all of us believe it. Of course, tabloid horoscopes do not add faith in the truthfulness of the predictions.

But do you know that ancient Arabs made long and complicated calculations that were written in separate huge books to get the right future forecast for the single person? These calculations usually took several weeks to finish; they required not only the exact date of your birth, but also exact day, hour, minute, even second of birth of your parents, some of the relatives, even strangers.

Moreover, they took into account positions of the planets, the Sun, the Moon, the Earth itself. And these positions were calculated in the same way as they are calculated now by modern scientists, who use fast computers and latest gadgets.

So, as you see, once astrology was rather exact, complicated and demanding science that was later abused and misled.

Now we read horoscopes just for fun, and don't know their true history and nature. To say more, astronomy takes its origin from the astrology, because first star charts and observations were brought from Arabian countries.

But I won't say that stars influence our future. What I really want to say is that stars influence our health and state of mood by the magnetic and physical interconnection with the Earth, which, in its turn, influences us directly.

So, even if you do not believe that stars influence you, they do influence every part of the world you live in, and these parts, in their turn, have a certain impact on you.

Reason three is proved.

When it comes to the growth or fading of the Moon and its influence on hair growth, the existence of such is explained by firm and solid law of nature.

The Moon and the Earth are bound by the mutual attraction. High and low tides of the Ocean exist because the Moon approaches and moves away from the Earth in a six-hour cycle. The growth-fading lunar cycle has eight stages, and this cycle influences the Earth in the same way as the six-hour cycle does.

Moreover, the Moon rotates around its axis, as well as around the Earth, along oval orbit, so there are points when the Moon is closer to the Earth and when the Moon is further from the Earth. It all moves us into complicated eight-staged ellipse lunar cycle.
Lunar cycle leads to the minor changes in the atmospheric pressure and the power of the Earth gravity. In its turn this affects animal and human health and behavior. For example, doctors report an increase in epileptic seizures and bleeding ulcers at the time of the full moon.
Gravity is one of the Earth's strongest forces, so you can't ignore the Moon.
If we now think more about certain similarities between natural world and human organism, we will see that plants and herbs grow better or worse according to the lunar cycle. Moreover, it is a common practice when coffee trader view chart of the winter full moon to plan their coffee sales. The connection between the full moon and plant growth is so well established that it affects investment patterns.

Hair growth is affected by the Moon in the same way, as anything else on the planet. When the gravity changes, state of your health changes, too. With the lower gravity, even if the change is so small that you don't feel it, your hair grows slower. It happens in the beginning of the moon cycle and in the middle, on the full moon.

During the new moon and the old moon, the gravity is bigger, and the hair grows faster. Thus, the perfect time for visiting your stylist is on the 3-11th days of the moon cycle, as well as on17-24th days. Your hair will grow faster during these days.

Even if you do not believe all of the said, you can't deny the influence of gravity on human organism. Thus, there really are certain connections and influences of the Moon on the hair growth.

There are only few reminding to those who expect miracles:
• Changes in Earth's gravity are very small, so you shouldn't expect fantastic results.
• If your stylist has a "heavy" hand and your hair doesn't grow back in two weeks after hair cut, you shouldn't expect a miraculous hair growth, too.
• If your hair is in unhealthy condition, it will use any opportunity to revive itself first, and only then it will grow longer.
• My last reminding is that if you used to have short haircut, and now you've decided to grow your hair long, it will take time, doesn't matter when you cut your hair, and who cuts it. Our hair grows only up to 5-7 mm per month, and this is a proven scientific fact.

So, whether or not you believe that the Moon and hair growth are connected, you would agree that as long as you live on the planet, you will feel, consciously or subconsciously, all changes and influences made by our planet and its counterparts.

Other items that emergency cards were used to purchase are the following:

A flotation device of questionable effect, called diamond jewelry.

An escape route from the rising waters to a vacation in the Dominican Republic.

Salvation from a divorce lawyer by paying off a $1,000 legal bill.

Drying out at a strip club, where the recuperative process required $600.

Recuperation with $400 of "adult erotica products."

The auditors concluded that such purchases were "not necessary to satisfy legitimate disaster needs."

Greg Kutz, a GAO forensic auditor, said one "fraudster" way up in West Virginia received a rental assistance check by using the address of a cemetery in New Orleans.

Another application, employing a vacant lot as an address, found favor in FEMA for a payment of $2,358 in rental assistance.

The relief organization also paid $8,000 and then $5,000 more, in a double-dip into rental assistance, to help a long-suffering recipient survive at a resort hotel in Honolulu.

The GAO also found that FEMA lost track of 750 debit cards, worth a total of $1.5 million.

As a result of the debit-card debacle, FEMA itself has been scheduled to receive federal disaster relief.

Amateur radio is a hobby and has over 600,000 radio operators in the USA alone. The hobby is about communications and various ways of communicating via radio waves.

What most people do not know about the hobby and the people that are operators is that they are one of the most used groups in a disaster situation.

The amateur radio community has networks set up all over the world that can be activated quickly if there is a disaster anywhere in the world. Amateurs worked weeks at the site of 9-1-1 in New York side by side with rescue crews supplying communications.

When there is a disaster such a hurricanes or tornadoes or the likes of 9-1-1 then one of the first things to go away is the local communications. Phones go down and electricity and the only thing left is amateur radio operators that can operate from a battery and a piece of wire for an antenna.

Many operators were involved this last year in all the hurricanes that we had. The amateurs had hurricane watch nets up all over the world just watching and reporting the advance of these storms. Once these storm passed the radio operators set up nets to pass traffic for rescue groups as well as passing health and welfare traffic to people trying the get in touch with relatives in the stricken area. It is always great to get a message out to someone that says we are ok and we are alive.

Amateur radio operators are the eyes of the National Weather Service. If you do not believe that then just ask someone that works for the weather service. Every National Weather Service office in the USA has amateur radio operators on duty any time that there are storms in the area. The weather service does have a great radar but the radar cannot see the storms like human eyes can.

Some where in this country there are amateur operators watching storms and reporting what they see to the National Weather Service almost any time of the day and night. These radio operators have been trained in storm watching so that they will be able to send reports that the weather service that can used immediately. From that point all the reported storm data goes out to weather radio and local radio and TV stations for broadcast to the public.

These amateur radio operators may or may not be heroes but they are always there when needed to warn the public of danger. The kicker to all this is that the operators buy all their own radio equipment and give their time to keep the public safe.

Always doing the job in the background at no cost to the public. Usually this service gets no recognition for saving lives. Heroes? You decide.

How to Select a Coin Dealer for Your Coin Collection

Why do I Need a Coin Dealer?

It is very difficult to build a collection of rare coins without a connection to a good coin dealer. If you are an investor hoping to make a profit with your collection of rare coins, building relationships with good coin dealers is vital to your success. If you are interested in making the highest profits possible with your coin collection, you will need to find a merchant partner who is experienced in the specific rare coins that interest you, and who will sell them to you at a good price. Most coin dealers will charge a lower premium on the sale of coins to their best customers. After all, it makes good business sense to get the most profit possible from a person who will do business with you only once. If you have a long-term relationship, however, the margin does not need to be as high for the coin dealer to make a good profit.

Because coin dealers are experts in their chosen fields, they will also have better connections than individuals who buy coins on their own will. Finding the right vendor or wholesaler can be a long and difficult task for someone new to the coin collecting trade. Coin dealers will also be more likely to recognize a counterfeit coin, have a higher chance of hearing about the sale of the specific rare coins that interest you, and will recognize an asking price that is over- or undervalued. As an investor, these are all critically important points for your success.

Building a long-term relationship with a knowledgeable coin dealer is the best way to protect the money that you invest into rare coins. All too often, new coin collectors who try to go it on their own without professional help end up being scammed out of hundreds or thousands of dollars.

What Do I Look For in a Coin Dealer?

All coin dealers are not created equal, and it is nearly impossible to specialize in every area when it comes to collecting rare coins. Therefore, it's important to know what to look for before you select a professional for your coin collecting needs.

The first vital piece of information that you'll need when considering coin dealers is his or her professional qualifications. Some important questions to ask include, does the coin dealer belong to any professional groups? How long has he or she been in business? Can the coin merchant provide references from other satisfied customers? One of the best indications that a vendor has a high level of professionalism is a membership in the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG). This group includes the most reputable coin dealers in the business thanks to an emphasis on ethics.

The second most important question to put to a prospective coin dealer is the area in which he or she specializes. There are so many different kinds of rare coins to collect, ranging from gold bullion coins to ancient Roman coins, that it is impossible to be a true expert in all of them. You'll want to find a merchant that specializes in the particular area that is of interest to you. A trader might be able to recognize every rare American coin at a glance, but that won't do you a lot of good if you really want to collect legal tender from medieval times.

Finally, you should consider the motivation of the coin dealers you are considering. A highly motivated coin merchant will go to shows and retailer auctions, keep abreast of current prices and trends, and will generally keep up-to-date with the current coin market. Any investor will recognize the impact of current information on profit levels. A coin trader who is highly motivated will also be more likely to provide you with excellent service and the best rare coins.

Once you have selected a coin dealer, it is important to reward him or her with your loyalty. You are likely to get the best prices and service from coin dealers who know that you are working exclusively with them.

Do you ever notice the picture on the address stamp? It is astounding to see just how many different kinds of address stamp pictures are seen on envelopes throughout the world. From famous presidents to regular members of the Disney World crew, there are many different pictures and icons that are featured on an address stamp.

When we take a minute to reflect on some of the images we see on these stamps, it is easy to see that even these small little sticky pieces of paper mean more than the cents they are worth. In other words, there can be some value of memory or meaning behind an address stamp for some consumers.

This is probably why many people collect stamps, because of the meaning behind some of them. The hobby of collecting stamps can be a passion, or something that started when someone found one that had some kind of momentous value to it. After all, this kind of value would be enough for anyone to keep it.

Collecting stamps can serve as a means to relax, to reflect, to play or more simply a time of redemption. It is amazing to think about the ways a simple address stamp can exert a positive impact on someones life, and not just because he or she gets an all important letter in the mail either. The bottom line is that collecting address stamps may not be for everyone, but it sure should not be ruled out as a great hobby to take part in when it comes to embracing part of our American culture, or our Worlds culture for that matter.

But in reality when someone enjoys the beauty of what is printed on an address stamp, and the value of some of these stamps just may make them rich one day, there does not seem to be a time wasting element here. The hobby offers a lot to people who are interested in it.

No, I didn't misspell the word sweet. Suet is a particular food that birds just can't resist, to wit, a great way to attract them to your bird house.

A Suet Way To Attract Birds To Your Yard

Make no mistake about it, Suet is some nasty stuff. It is the thick, white fat from a side of beef. It is slick and hardly appetizing food stuff. That is, unless you are a bird. For some unknown reason, Suet is the chocolate of the bird habitat. If you want to attract birds to the bird house you have set up in the backyard, this is the stuff guaranteed to do it.

You can buy Suet at your local grocery store. Many offer it in a combination with bird seeds of a sort, but grocery store bird seed is not the best. All and all, you are probably better off just buying it without the helpful additives.

Once you have the Suet, you need to consider how exactly to use it. There are a couple of problems. First, it is fat. Fat does not do well in the sun, at least not over a few days. It spoils, turning goopy and starts putting off a nasty fragrance. As a result, you should probably stick to small amounts of Suet as bait and some will remove it in the evening. Another option is to actually melt the fat and mix it with whatever else you have been using as bait. Cracked corn, sunflower seeds, peanuts, and milo are a few typical choices.

Anyway you cut it, Suet is some nasty stuff. It is, however, a great way to get the attention of a wide variety of birds in your area.

Purchase a crystal animal figurine from the area where the making of crystal and blowing glass first began. The Czech and Slovak Republics have been involved in crafting crystal figurines for more than 500 years. Small workshops in towns and villages were the settings where the first crystal animal figurine came from in cat and dragon designs. Today the dolphin is also popular as a crystal animal figurine.

The art of blowing glass to make a crystal animal figurine has not changed in any significant way throughout the centuries. The process begins with the craftsman making the molten glass in a furnace and then he blows it into various shapes, such as a crystal dragon figurine or a crystal cat figurine. A wooden mold is also used to shape the glass. After the craftsman inspects the crystal dolphin figurine and finds that it is perfect, he then lets it cool for 48 hours.

After the crystal animal figurine has cooled for the specific period of time, then the craftsman adds the specific details he wants to see in the crystal. Many of the crystal cat figurines or those of other animals are left smooth, but there may be details and shapes that need to be added to the figurine, such as eyes. This process is how Bohemian crystal figurines are made and the workshops are noted for their attention to detail and perfection in the pieces they produce.

Although a Bohemian crystal animal figurine is expensive, it is well worth the money that you pay for it. This is a true work of art that you will definitely want to add to your collection. Having one of these figurines, such as a crystal cat figurine or a crystal dolphin figurine, in your curio cabinet carries with it centuries of history. A Rare Bird Indeed For Bird Watchers – The Atlantic Puffin

Observing an Atlantic Puffin is a bird watcher's golden egg because they are not prevalent in the world. As the name suggests, they can only be found on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and only during certain times of the year. If you are building a life list, this is a bird that will set you apart from others.

The Atlantic Puffin is a beautiful bird, a member of the Auk family of birds. A seabird, this little bird is a fisher in the ocean, often diving 50 feet or more to catch dinner. It is marked by its white lower body, which contrasts with a midnight black back and wings. The head is black topped with white around the eyes and extending to the beak. The beak is a cornucopia of sweeping colors with yellow, black and red being the dominant pigments.

This little beauty is the only member of the Puffin family of birds found in the Atlantic. It is typically found in northern reaches, from Maine up through the artic and down through northern Europe. Occasionally, the Puffin will range as far south as North Carolina on the coast of North America, but not often. For bird watcher's in the continental United States and elsewhere, this makes the bird a sighting worth having.

The Atlantic Puffin is a bird that seems to teeter back and forth between population problems. In the 1800s, the bird was under serious pressure due to the harvesting of its eggs by humans. Coming to shore to mate in cliff outcrops, the female laid only one egg. The losses thus were substantial and the bird nearly disappeared. Recently, populations have begun to grow again, but now new threats exist. Gulls and rat populations are once again threatening the breading grounds of these exquisite birds. Conservation efforts are fighting back and populations are at least remaining steady with some studies suggesting they are actually growing at a rate of five to ten percent.

If the opportunity presents itself, a birding expedition to sight the Atlantic Puffin is definitely worth a go. The birds have a relatively small onshore territory, which makes them a fairly rare find for the avid birder.

Really Low-Cost Ways to Start Your Stamp Collection

Really Low-Cost Ways to Start Your Stamp Collection

Stamp collecting doesn't have to be an expensive hobby. You can enjoy collecting stamps with limited financial resources. Here are 10 really low-cost ways to start stamp collecting.

Keywords:

Article Body:
Stamp collecting doesn't have to be an expensive hobby. You can enjoy collecting stamps with limited financial resources. Here are 10 really low-cost ways to start stamp collecting.

1. Ask your friends to use commemorative stamps on their mail when they write to you. Commemorative stamps are generally larger than regular stamps and are issued to honor famous people, places, or events. Because commemorative stamps are usually issued in lesser quantities than common smaller stamps, they are of much more interest to collectors. Tell your friends that you are a stamp collector and ask them to request commemorative stamps at the post office.

2. When you send away for offers that require postage or self-addressed, stamped envelopes, use commemorative stamps. You'll get them back when the envelopes are returned to you.

3. Ask your neighbors, friends, and relatives to save their used stamps for you. You'll find that most people will be happy to save their stamps for you when they learn that you are a collector.

4. If you know someone who gets letters from other countries, ask them to save those stamps. Always be on the lookout for potentially good stamp contacts, and don't be afraid to ask them to go through their mail for you before they throw away all the envelopes.

5. Ask friends and family to save the envelopes from their office mail for you. Many businesses get a lot of foreign mail and regularly throw away stamps that have interest and value to a collector.

6. Ask your parents if they have any old letters with stamps on the envelopes. Don't peel the stamp off the envelope. This will cause thin spots or tears, both of which ruin a stamp's appearance and lessen its value to collectors. Always tear off the envelope corner so that there is paper all around the stamp, and make sure that all of the perforations are undamaged.

7. If you know other stamp collectors, ask them if they have duplicates that they are willing to give or sell to you. Many collectors have thousands of duplicates and they are often willing to help get new philatelists get started by giving them stamps or by selling them packets of stamps much more cheaply than can be purchased in stores or by mail.

8. Look for free stamps advertised by stamp companies. Free stamps are often offered along with "approvals," an assortment of other stamps that you must either buy or return. This can be a convenient way to buy stamps. Note, however, that you usually have to pay the return postage if you return the approval stamps.

9. Check out stamp clubs in your area. Clubs may offer stamps as prizes, or have inexpensive stamps you can afford to buy. Some stamp clubs sponsor junior clubs the local community center, YMCA, or schools.

10. Consider starting a stamp club if one doesn't already exist in your area. It only takes four or five other stamp collectors who are interested in getting together to learn about and trade stamps and ideas.

With free stamps and a few inexpensive accessories, such as a small album and a package of stamp hinges, even collectors with little money can have a great time.

So, what are you waiting for? Start collecting stamps today!

7 Things to Consider Before Purchasing Model Ship Kits

7 Things to Consider Before Purchasing Model Ship Kits

Word Count:
423

Summary:
Here are some things to consider before you spend your money on a model ship kit.

Keywords:
model ship kits

Article Body:
Whenever you make any purchase it is important to take into account what you are buying. Whether buying for yourself or for someone else as a gift, you should examine your options and think through what you would like to buy. Purchasing model ship kits is no different. Additionally, because model ship kits can be rather expensive, it is sometimes even more important for you to carefully consider your options before committing to one kit or another. Here are some things to consider before you spend your money on a model ship kit.

Budget. This is always the first consideration whenever you buy anything, including model ship kits. Because there are kits that cost tens of thousands of dollars as well as those that cost less than $100, it is important to know how much you are willing to spend.

Skill Level. Different model ship kits are for people of different skill levels. Make sure you know whether you need a beginner, intermediate, or advanced kit before you buy. It is not so bad to give one that is below level, but the results can be devastating when the skill level is too advanced.

Motorized or Not. Some model ship kits come with motors so that they can self-propel through the water. These can be expensive to fuel and maintain, so make sure you understand what is involved before purchasing a motorized ship.

Time Period. There are ships from many different time periods. Model ship kits offer a wide range of time periods in the history of sea travel. If you or someone you are buying for has a preference, you should make sure that the kit you purchase meets that preference.

Specific Ship. Not only is it possible to buy model ship kits that fit a time period, but it is also possible to build replicas of ships that actually existed (or still do). So find out whether you or your friend needs a certain ship for a collection, and then buy that ship.

Quality. If you are concerned about quality, make sure that you purchase your model ship kits from a reputable company. There are plenty of hobby shops and online kit purveyors that can help you find a good quality ship, often at good prices.

Support. The best hobby shops and other sellers of model ship kits offer support and advice. Some even offer warrantees on their products. If you are looking for good service, make sure you purchase your kit from a company that provides support and help from professionals.

3 Things You Must Have In Order To Profit From Your Hobby

3 Things You Must Have In Order To Profit From Your Hobby

Word Count:
506

Summary:
Turning your favorite hobby into a profitable business isn't as difficult as you think. But there are three things you absolutely must have in order to succeed

Keywords:
profitable hobby, work from home, home based business, hobby, business opportunity

Article Body:
With over 70% of people who responded to a recent survey revealing that they were thinking about starting a business of some sort, working from home is becoming more the norm than ever before.

The problem for many people is that they don't really know where to start and how to turn their dream into something tangible.

3 critical things you'll need in order to turn your hobby into a profitable business are -

#1 – A Positive Attitude

By far your biggest asset in turning your favorite hobby into a thriving business is a positive attitude. I think it was Harry F. Banks who said, "Attitude determines your altitude".

If you are going to pursue your dream and make it a reality, you must have a positive attitude and the willingness to commit to what it takes to make it happen.

So many people start out on the road to turning their hobby into a business, and then at the first sign of an obstacle, they give up, often just before they start to see results.

A positive attitude will help you to break through the barriers and temporary setbacks and reach your desired goal.

#2 – The Determination To Succeed

Many people who fall in love with the idea of turning their hobby into a business are looking for an easy way out and at the first problem, they give up and let circumstances crush their dreams.

By developing a fierce determination to succeed, your chances of creating a profitable business are infinitely higher and you are virtually setting yourself up for success.

While there are not guarantees that you will eventually make it, having the determination to push on regardless of minor problems and find solutions is the mark of a true winner.

Determination and a positive attitude can work together to help a dedicated person succeed where others have failed

#3 – A Proven System

The final and some would say most important thing you'll need is a proven system for marketing your products and/or services.

You need a step by step process that you can follow to ensure your success; something that other's have used successfully to achieve the same goal you have.

It's no use having an incredibly positive attitude and loads of determination if you choose a system that's flawed and never had a chance of working in the first place.

Look for proof that other people have followed any system you are considering and become successful.

Unfortunately, many people waste money, and more importantly, valuable time, chasing the latest fad or scheme offered by unscrupulous promoters. Most of these schemes haven't agot  hope of succeeding, but people fall for them every day.

Don't ever take the promoter's word that it will work for you…demand unquestionable PROOF that many people, from all walks of life, have been able to use what he or she is offering to turn their hobby or passion into a profitable business.

When it comes to the system, results are the only thing that matters…

"Knot With My Thread" - Stringing Choices For Beading & Jewelry Making.

There are many issues about the choice of stringing material for beading. Here is an interesting article on the different stringing materials and their usage.

Keywords:
beads, beading, gemstone, gems, quartz, precious, jewrly, jewelry making

Article Body:
One very important lesson I learned is that there is no one, all-purpose (Universal) stringing material.

Here are the major stringing materials along with how and when to use each of them.

SILK THREAD: Silk has a wondrous "hand" (a soft, flexible feel). This thread comes in many sizes and colors. It comes packaged on spools, and "carded" with an attached needle. This is a classic stringing material and forms beautiful knots between pearls and beads. But, silk tends to be relatively fragile. It can stretch, be cut by abrasive beads, rot when wet, and pearls strung on silk should be re strung every few years. It is best to use silk when stringing pearls and lightweight, smooth-holed beads, only. A needle is necessary.

NYLON THREAD: (Nymo): This thread also comes in many sizes and colors. It comes packaged on spools, on bobbins, and "carded" with a needle attached. Nylon can be used where-ever silk can and is not as fragile. This material knots beautifully and can be used for pearl stringing, in some strung jewelry, seed beadwork, loom weaving, for Peyote and other specialty stitches, and heishi. Nylon stretches much less than silk, and it won't rot when wet. Like silk, you shouldn't use beads with sharp edged holes or that are heavy. When you use nylon thread, I would recommend you coat your thread with bee's wax or "Thread HeavenTM " before use to prevent it from fraying. A needle is necessary.

BONDED NYLON: This is a much stronger form of nylon thread. The strands are physically bonded together for extra strength and abrasion protection. Although it knots well, it doesn't have the "hand" of silk. Bonded nylon comes in a variety of colors and smaller spools. Because of its abrasion resistance, you can use it with "hard", more abrasive gem beads; in fact this comes close to being a "Universal Thread". Brand names include: "Stringth" or "Silkon". A needle is necessary, although you can put "Super Glue" on the end to form a "Self-needle". This is a favorite beading material of mine.

FISHING LINE: This material is a hard, semi-rigid, single strand of plastic. It doesn't knot well, and in time sunlight or ultraviolet light can cause it to weaken and fall apart. Fishing line is purchased on small spools and is sold in sporting goods stores. Personally, I use fishing line for two purposes. I use it to do my preliminary stringing while I am designing a necklace (I transfer the beads to a better material for the final product), and to string together "raw" strands of beads. There is no needle necessary. I would never use this material for a final beaded piece.
